Flaxable Sunrise – aluminium photo print

SKU: APP-09 Categories: ,

March 2010, 6.35am. Dawn breaking across St Helena, viewed from near the top of Diana’s Peak. In the left foreground, New Zealand flax. In the distance the pointed shape of Flagstaff, alongside the chunky landmark of the Longwood Barn. The flax that covers much of the island’s central peaks was once a vital resource when the flax industry thrived on St Helena, from 1907 – 1966. Raw flax fibre was cultivated and exported during this time to make twine and rope. Today a huge conservation effort is underway to reclaim some of the upper slopes by re-introducing many of the endemic plants that once flourished there.

Pictures are UV printed on a 3mm aluminium panel with a matte finish.
